Game Room Coming Along Using Interlocking Garage Floor Pad

Garage Floor Pads used to create a game room with interlocking garage floor pad tiles.

from Dan ZZ
Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been working on my “Game Room”–essentially a closed space in the garage that will host my MAME cabinet, pinball machine, and gaming PC, along with a treadmill for exercising. Most of the work is done and I’ve moved all the gear in.

It’s a small space, just 10×12′ but it’s plenty big enough for what’s in there. I’ve painted the walls and put down some interlocking floor pads to make the concrete easier to stand on. I’ve also hung some of my medieval themed paintings: The Accolade and Godspeed for the moment.

Still left to finish: install A/C (this will mean cutting an opening in one wall), run new wires from the garage sub-panel for a new circuit, add a plug for the machines (and another plug for tools) and then close up the rest of the drywall. Right now there’s a fluorescent fixture for light (too glaring in off the pinball glass an MAME screen) that I need to replace.

Once that’s done, let the games begin!

Swisstrax Interlocking Floor Tiles: Never Has Flooring Induced So Much Garage Envy

A whole new level of garage gear obsession. [click on image]

from Gear Patrol

If you are anything like me, then your garage serves as a multifunctional part of your home. It’s a place to park your vehicles, store your tools, hide your toys, and, just maybe, hide yourself. If your garage is anything like my garage, then its floor looks like absolute crap. Enter Swisstrax.

Originally hailing from Switzerland but now manufactured in California, Swisstrax represents Gear Patrol’s new favorite innovation from the neutral nation, coming out of nowhere to unseat Ricola cough drops and holey cheese. Swisstrax offers six different styles of tile, some of which are available in fourteen different colors. Even better, their website features a floor designer whereby you can layout a custom floor and easily order all the pieces you’ll need. Here’s a tip: the square tiles lend themselves perfectly to oversized renderings of your favorite 8-bit game characters (think Mario, the size of a Mazda).

Their various designs suit garages, workout rooms, airplane hangars, and more. Each tile features a hefty complement of snap locks to secure it to its brethren, and a four point injection molding process that allows a Swisstrax floor to withstand up to 40,000 pounds of roll-over compression. Even if you could overwhelm this floor system with the sheer bulk of your man-toys, you’d be backed by a 12 year warranty. My favorite feature is simply a function of the tiles interlocking design. Unlike other floor coatings and coverings, the tiles are inherently portable and reusable. Consider me impressed.

The best way to test garage flooring, get a Ferrari F430. [Courtesy: Swisstrax]

Gear Patrol Hands-On: GP procured Swisstrax floor tiling for hands-on testing. We pinched, pulled, stomped, and even bit the Swisstrax with all of our combined might. Nary a scratch was made. Conclusion: this is one tough tile.

Garage Floor Pad Q & A

Question: I have a two car garage; what sizes do I need to cover my entire garage floor?
Answer: There are no standards in the size of garage floors, Most will measure around the 400 square foot range. However the actual dimensions [length and width] vary from garage to garage, this affects the size of the garage floor cover you may need. "Please contact one of our experts with the dimensions of your garage floor, they will be more than glad to assist you in determining the most practical garage floor pad for your application."

Question: What is the difference between the Ribbed parking pad and/or the Coin and Diamond pattern parking pads?
Answer: The ribbed parking pad is mainly used in the northern states where ice and snow build up on your vehicle is an issue, as the snow and ice melts, the ribs help to contain and channel the debris and moisture toward the garage door, as long as there is sufficient slope to the structure/slab to allow this. The ribbed parking pad is an excellent option for this scenario; however it can be a lot harder to keep clean during the summer months ; I.E mopping, sweeping, squeegee, etc... As we have found the Coin and Diamond parking pad to be most functional in conditions where water is not such an issue and ease of cleaning is desired.

Question: Do the Garage floor covers/parking pads stay in place when a car is driven on them?
Answer:
YES; the Garage floor covers/parking pads were specifically designed for the residential garage, all scenarios were considered when the Garage floor covers/parking pads were developed.

Question: Does the garage floor mat/garage floor cover curl up when it is unrolled?
Answer:
NO, Once the garage floor mat/parking pad is unrolled and allowed to relax; it will lay flat on all edges; however in some instances a double sided tape may be used to prevent a tripping hazard.

Question: What is the difference between the standard grade ribbed garage floor cover and the commercial grade ribbed garage floor cover?
Answer: The difference is in the overall thickness. The standard grade garage flooring is .05" to .06" in thickness ( about the thickness of a dime ) We recommends this garage floor to be used in the areas of only occasional snowfall and used during the winter months only to keep the Garage floor from becoming too slippery and to prevent ponding water. The commercial grade ribbed garage flooring is .07" to .08" in thickness (about the thickness of a quarter) this garage flooring to be used in the areas of frequent snowfall and is suitable for year around usage, the added thickness will provide a durable garage flooring that will provide many years of service.

Question: What is the advantage of the interlocking garage floor tiles pad over the garage floor mat garage floor cover?
Answer: The advantage's of interlocking garage floor tile used as a garage floor pad, over the garage floor mat is that the tile can be assembled to achieve a pattern on the garage floor; like a checker board or a border effect, another advantage is in the overall construction itself, the tile is thicker which provides extreme durability where it is needed.

Why Protect Your Garage Floor?

By Tom Turner

There are many reasons for ensuring that you protect your garage floor. This area of your property which often gets forgotten about and is certainly going to have to put up with a lot of wear and tear through the years. Certainly if you live in an area where the winters are harsh then think about all that salt you will be getting on your garage floor every time you drive the car back into it. However, by putting down a good quality garage flooring you should help it to last that little bit longer.

Certainly the best types of garage flooring are those which are resin based such as those produced. They both provide resin based garage flooring and are resistant to a varied range of chemicals such as oil. But not only do these types of floorings protect your garage floor they also make it look great as well.

Luckily today the types of garage floorings available come in a variety of different colors so you don't need to stick to boring old grey or black. Also if you want you can add a flaking material which is normally made from stone and this will provide you with a little more grip as well as providing your garage floor with a little classier look to it. But probably the best reason for coating your garage floor with a special flooring cover is that it will help the floor to last longer. Unfortunately if you do not coat your garage floor with one of the best epoxy resins on the market today you may find that the water and oil will get into the garage flooring and after some time they will begin to eat away at it and in turn you may find yourself having to replace the garage floor completely. Also if you happen to spill anything on your new garage flooring you will find that it is much easier to clean it up.

Although there are several different types of coating for your garage floor available certainly the epoxy resin based paints are the most popular of all. The best way to see if your garage floor is able to have this paint applied to it is by carry out a very simple test. All you need do is pour some water on to your garage floor and is if it soaks into it or just stays on top. Unfortunately if the water remains on top of the garage flooring then it has been treated with a sealer and this needs to be removed before you can apply a new garage flooring paint to yours. But prior to painting on the new epoxy garage flooring resin you will need to ensure that it is completely free of dirt.
